Stay Clear Of The Automatic Fly Fishing Reel

As you would expect, an automatic fly fishing reel does the retrieving of the line automatically. This means that if you are an angler that is using an automatic fly fishing reel then you don’t need to turn a handle in order to retrieve your line. It is therefore not even surprising to learn that automatic fly fishing reels do not come with any handles and if you want to retrieve the line on an automatic fly fishing reel all you really have to do is press a trigger that will release a spring that will then begin the process of retrieving the line.

Heavy And Not Very Durable

Though this seems to be reason enough to buy an automatic fly fishing reel and use it there is also a downside to it which is that such reels are quite heavy and they are not all that durable either and this is because chances of breakdowns increase since there are too many parts that can and will often develop snags. In addition, an automatic fly fishing reel does not provide any fine drag setting which would have prevented light tippets and finally such reels do not allow for much backing. There is also another headache to using such reels and that is changing the spools is very time consuming and also very painful.

All these downsides to using an automatic fly fishing reel have ensured that such reels are not very popular among fly fishers and since their operations are not perfect it is not surprising to find that very few anglers risk using such reels. No doubt, in the recent past much improvements have helped to improve the functioning of the automatic fly fishing reel; but, if you are really serious about your fly fishing you would do well to steer clear of the automatic fly fishing reel.

And, if you are interested in saltwater fly fishing then you must certainly not risk using an automatic fly fishing reel and in fact, it is only the very foolhardy anglers that would attempt using such reels when they are doing saltwater fishing. The fact is that the parts will not stand up to heavy usage and handling and without sufficient backing such reels would prove to be quite useless when you try and control large fish at the end of your fishing line.

The history behind the antique fly fishing reel is truly magnificent and fascinating. In fact, collectors of such reels travel far and wide in order to find a perfect reel that has withstood the test of time.
