The History Of Mixed Martial Arts: Where Did It All Start?

The sport of MMA is one that has certainly come far. Many people wonder where the sport did all get started from and how it got to be at the height of popularity of today. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport which actually only came about a little over a decade ago. The first UFC fight ever took place in the year 1993.

Even though the UFC did catch on right away as a popular contact sport, it was not until about the year 2003 when it really began to soar in popularity. MMA fighting was popular almost immediately. Gracie fought in all the first UFC fights and won most of them. One of the first widely recognized names in the sport was Royce Gracie who was by far the biggest star in the sport from the start.

Today athletes in MMA are much more versatile and well rounded because they study all styles of fighting in order to have the most advantage over their opponent. Today the same is not so true and instead fighters need to be skilled in all different styles of fighting if they want to stand a chance of winning. The athletes in MMA are so well rounded today that fighters from the first UFC fights would not likely stand up next to them. Gracie was the definitely the star of the UFC and the first person to showcase the MMA sport.

Other members of the Gracie family are also in MMA and that includes his father Helio Gracie and his brother Carlos Gracie. As the years went by, more and more athletes got their start in MMA fighting and that includes everyone from Ken Shamrock to Randy Couture. The changes from the MMA then and the MMA sport now are incredible. It is a sport that is known all around the world and people pay insane amounts of money to watch UFC fight nights on Pay Per View and live, which take place on a regular basis.

In the beginning the UFC was pretty discreet and relatively unheard of, even for the first few years. More and more athletes all the time are deciding they want to get started in MMA and many have great success with it. Today the most popular faces in the game have changed as some of the pros have moved out and now we are more familiar with names like Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin. The sport of MMA is more infamous than ever and its reign of popularity as a sport is expected to only continue as time goes on.
