Composition Of Dirt Bike Helmets

With regards to dirt bike safety equipment, the helmet takes the first place in priority. In fact, almost every country in the world passed laws that a biker should wear a helmet when he is traveling on or off the road in a motorcycle.

Dirt bike helmets are very important in keeping the biker alive. Nothing can help a biker more in a crash situation than a helmet. Aside from head protection, a dirt bike helmet can also shield the biker's face, eyes and ears from debris.

There are three types of dirt bike helmets. First is the full face helmet. This type of helmet covers the entire face and head. The helmet even has a part that protects the chin. It can offer the best protection. However, a full face helmet is hot and the biker can't hear clearly when wearing it.

Second is the three quarter type of helmet. This type of helmet covers the ears and the back of the skull. It has no chin protection. Some three quarter helmets have visors which offer some facial protection.

Lastly, a half helmet covers just the top of the head. It offers the least amount of protection. It is also the most comfortable.

Whatever the case, dirt bike helmets have two major protective layers. The outer thinner layer is made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS plastic, fiberglass, Kevlar or carbon fiber. This layer prevents sharp objects from penetrating the skull. It also provides structure to the inner layer of protection from disintegrating when the helmet hits a hard surface such as the pavement.

The second protective layer is made out of expanded polystyrene foam or polypropylene foam. This layer is thick and absorbs the impact. Upon impact, the foam is crushed.

For comfort, the interior of the helmet is packed with foam and padding.

All dirt bike helmets are designed to break. The helmet absorbs the energy and impact of the fall, instead of the biker's skull. After an impact, the destroyed helmet should be thrown away and a new one should be purchased. Better yet, it is a good idea to change the helmet every three or four years even if it did not sustain an impact.

While black dirt bike helmets look menacing and cool, it is best to wear light colored helmets such as white or yellow. By wearing these colors, the biker is easy to spot. Therefore, chances of accidents are further reduced. Black or dark colored helmets make the biker difficult to see.

Remember thought that helmets sometimes fail. Therefore, common sense and driving smart are a biker's best friends to avoid accidents.
