Cars of NASCAR Racing

Ever wondered what makes the cars of NASCAR racing different from those streetcars we see around? What are the dynamics in place inside a NASCAR racing car?

At the very outset, racing were done on dirt tracks. These roads were rough on original cars. This is why NASCAR has allowed modification to be made on cars for NASCAR racing purposes. Modifications through the times have been both for safety and competition purposes. These modifications though are governed by NASCAR rules and are checked at every race. NASCAR racing cars are basically handmade with every detail of the car body, fame and engine formed from bare materials.

The safety aspect of these cars starts first and foremost on the design of the frame. Composed mainly of 3 parts, the middle section of the frame is made of tougher material in order to protect the driver. The front and back portion of the frames is made of thinner steel tubing to absorb the impact of the crash. Other safety devices placed on NASCAR racing cars are airbags, seatbelts, window nets, roof flaps, etc. All these are done with the safety of the driver in mind.

Then to the more interesting question, why do these NASCAR racing cars run so fast? Without any turbochargers, these cars have 750 horsepower and would go as fast as 200 mph. This speed can be attributed to the large engines these racing cars are packed with. Also the engines have extremely radical cam profiles, which will allow more air into the cylinders at very high speeds. These NASCAR racing cars have carburetors that can let in a good amount of air and fuel. They have ignition systems that can enable for spark timing customization for maximum power. Subsystems in the car like oil & steering pumps, coolant pumps, alternators, etc, are designed for sustained high-speed racing and high temperatures.

Quality standards are very high, as these NASCAR racing cars require that every part should be made with exacting tolerances so that the engines will be able to deliver the maximum power it can give out. These are crucial to have a winning edge over the competition.

NASCAR racing cars fascinate the fans with their sleek appeal, their affinity for speed, and their safety design. So the next time you are a spectator of a NASCAR race, you have a pretty good idea why these powerful & well-designed machines go so fiercely fast on the tracks.
