The sport of skateboarding is one that has a very long and interesting history. The history of skateboarding is full of different important moments and events. It was around this time that some surfers from sunny California decided to take the same idea as surfing only use it on the streets and this turned into the sport of skateboarding.

Skateboards were originally made out of these wooden boxes which were connected to roller skate wheels. They were obviously quite difficult to balance on but this was how the whole thing got started and when the first skaters began to take interest in the sport. It was around the year of 1963 when skateboarding really began to take off and became an incredibly popular hobby. Different contests and competitions began in small towns and more and more people became involved in the sport.

Although the sport did take a dive several times and people weren't sure just how long it would be around, it made its way back full force in the hippie era of the 1960s. The late 60s it was especially popular, boards were perfected and there were even certain tricks that were invented during this time. That includes the Ollie, invented by a man named Alan Gelfand. This is an infamous skating move that was created by Alan Gelfand, an avid skater who was nicknamed Ollie. To perform the trick he slammed his back foot on the tail of the skateboard and as he did, jumping into the air at the same time, the board popped up with him as he jumped.

Today the Ollie is recognized as being one of the most basic and popular moves. After the turn of the 21st century skateboarding became recognized globally as a legit sport and people stopped considering it as nothing more than a fun hobby to do on the side. It was no longer thought of as just a silly side hobby and instead as a profession that one could have and be successful at. No one knows where skateboarding will go from here but it sure doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The history of skateboarding will only continue with more monumental occasions and situations that will be remembered for the rest of time. Some even think that skateboarding may soon become recognized as an Olympic sport.
