Call Birds, Will Hunt

Birds are a dynamic breed and many are very colorful. It is no wonder that there is a great desire to hunt these birds. Calling them is another matter altogether. It requires a great deal of patience and perseverance to be able to make a call that birds will entice flock to the hunting area, but it is possible.

The following are basic tips and advice to be able to make a bird call that will actually be heeded by birds.

Work with what you have

There are bird calls that anyone can easily do using one’s own mouth. These bird calls will attract the smaller birds such as jays, sparrows, chickadees, hummingbirds, kingbirds, wrens, orioles, flycatchers, etc. Admittedly though, these types of small birds are difficult to hunt.

Make that call

This particular bird call that can be done using one’s own mouth is achieved by repeated rhythmic sounds. Try making the sound “psssh.” Do it continually and rhythmically. Different patterns work with various kinds of birds: one is a continuous “psssh”, “psssh”, “psssh” sound.

There is another pattern where the “psssh” sound is made and followed by a pause of a second or two pause, followed by another “psssh” sound, and another second or two of pausing. This pattern is repeated throughout the call.

Try to experiment ass much as possible: these sounds should last an average of about three seconds. Different rhythms are heeded by varying birds so know which calls are effective for the birds found in your usual hunting area.

Stop, kneel and listen

When making this particular bird call, it is more effective if you wait until you actually hear or see birds flying or sitting nearby. Kneeling down after calling is a preferable position, but if you do not want to kneel, you can simply stand without moving if possible. Try to stand and not move when you are near a tree or a shrub so that you will not be visible or attract the attention of the bird’s eye. These areas are usually the spots that birds perch.

Then, begin the call using a pattern or call series, pausing for a bit after three or four calls to determine if there are any signs that birds are coming towards you. If there are no signs that any more birds coming in repeat the procedure

Bird calling, just as in any activity that one wants to master, requires a lot of patience and practice. If one has these characteristics, nothing is impossible.
