Rules Of Soccer

Soccer is a game of simple rules, and the most basic rule is that the team scoring most goals wins. There are eleven starting players in each team, one of them is goalkeeper and ten are the outfield players. The game is played in the soccer pitch, and field dimensions are just over 100 yards long, though for youth soccer game, it could be shorter. Referee in the game ensures that all the players follow the set rules.

A soccer games lasts for two separate periods, and each period lasts for forty-five minutes. Winning captain has the choice to select which way his team will play the game, which can be advantageous in case of strong winds that could change the direction in the second half of the game. The substitutions vary, but in official competition games, only 3 substitutions per team are allowed. While the game is on, referee has the power to issue red and yellow cards, and also caution the players.

The teams defend the goal using a player who protects the goal or goalkeeper and four defenders. The duration of the game is 45 minutes each half, plus overtime for regular soccer game, but in cup, there can be extra time of 30 minutes. When the ball has wholly crossed the touch line or goal, irrespective of whether it is in the air or on the ground, a goal is scored. For scoring a goal, the player has to send the ball beyond the goal line, under the crossbar and between the goalposts.

During the game, some very specific terminology is used, and to the casual viewer, it can be very confusing. In the game of soccer, discipline is one of the most important factors to consider, and the game is mediated by a single referee on the pitch, and two officials called linesman on either side of the pitch. Most people find the offside rule as most confusing rule of the game. In such case, referee will stop the game and award a free kick to fouled team.

This is considered as the attempt to gain unfair advantage, and referee can award free kick for the defense. The player who is given red card must leave the field immediately, and is not allowed to come back for the rest of the game. There is a rectangular area in front of the goal, and if the referee feels that a foul has occurred by a player of defense, a penalty kick is awarded. A penalty kick is a type of kick which is taken from about 11 meters or twelve yards from the opponent's goal line.
