Speed Boat Fuel Saving Tips

A day's fun with friends or family should always have to be expensive. Most argue that since you can afford to buy a speed boat, you care less for fuel cost. As an owner, this is not always the case. Here's how you can save on fuel with your speed boat:

Fuel saving begins in choosing the right boat. Forgive me if this sounds like a remedial but this is important and if you can bear with me here, you'll see my point. When buying a speed boat, you have to consider the length of the boat and the type of engine it uses. Obviously, length means higher fuel consumption because it is heavier and creates more air and water drag depending on the brand and the design. It is important, therefore, that you do your research on different types of speed boat. There are not much of them in the market; this should not be so difficult.

Common conception is, larger engine equals higher fuel consumption. While there is some true to it, what really decides the amount of fuel it consumes is the weight if the load. The rule of thumb is, size your boat properly based on the amount of load and the type of activity that you plan do 75% of the time. Never buy a small one if you are going to board 10 people on it. A smaller boat with smaller engine is designed for a certain number of people. Overloading the boat forces the engine to work harder and thus, consuming more fuel. Also, decide if you want a gasoline or diesel engine boats.

Doing the required maintenance not only prolongs the life of your boat, it also keeps the fuel consumption at the right level. Skipping maintenance cycle also reduces the resale value of your boat and may leave you looking at the water from the bay instead of on the water enjoying a good summer day.

Don't bring unnecessary things. These add up to the weight and increase fuel consumption. Just bring what you need and remove all those things that you have not moved for years.

Remove things that can cause air drag and increase water resistance. Convertible tops with sides on as well as hard water deposits and algae decrease fuel economy. Buy as little canvas as possible (without compromising comfort) and remove objects from the hull – objects that should not be there.

Most manufacturers put standard propellers that are suited for normal operating conditions. Upgrading your propeller to high performance one made from aluminum or stainless steel can improve the performance of your boat and save considerable fuel. When changing propeller though, ask for professional advice on what's right for your boat.

Saving money on boat is just half the battle. The other half or the first half begins at the garage. Before leaving, make sure that your trailer is properly inflated. Under-inflated trailer tires as well as tires of your vehicle can increase fuel consumption substantially. Maintain the maximum recommended tire pressure both for your trailer and vehicle tires for optimum fuel mileage.

The point here is not to prevent you from enjoying water activities but to give you the right information on how to use your boat that will help you earn extra dollars in your pocket.
