The Sport And The Art Of Synchronized Swimming

If you have seen one or more swimmers seemingly dancing in the pool, accompanied by music, with motions well choreographed – you may have been a witness to synchronized swimming. This would be a sight to watch, and one who appreciates such art would marvel at how these swimmers make the moves and poses that are just plain outstanding.

Synchronized swimming has national and international competitions – as well as world championship competitions and the Olympics. These competitions will feature participants who have trained hard for their performance in the water. Aside from the degree of difficulty for each individual performing, it is even more challenging to perfect the choreography – but very well possible as shown in these competitions.

This synchronized swimming developed in the US at around the 1930s. This has been also referred to as water ballet. The synchronized movements along with the accompanying musical background would just leave you amazed by what is happening in front of you. These participants may it look so simple – and their grace is noteworthy. They seem to move so easily without hesitation and with no inkling of error, that their performance captures the appreciation and admiration of the watchers.

In synchronized swimming competitions, the swimmers are made to do routines. The grading will be based on technical merit, as well as on their artistic impression. The routines would involve lifts or throws – which definitely raises the degree of difficulty - and basic requirements as highlights, arm sections and figures.

The swimmers in this competition will wear noseclips, swimsuit costumes and headpieces. Their costumes will be decorated to match the music that will be played when they do synchronized swimming. However, goggles are not worn in such competitions as these do not contribute to the artistic appeal of the performance, in fact these may just be unsightly.

For those who want to learn synchronized swimming, there are clubs that cater to teaching those interested. You need to have a lot of patience though, and you should have that willingness to learn. Especially if you have limited swimming experience, you need a lot of work to do.

But if you never give up, and continue to learn – even at your own pace, you will eventually get there. Concentrate during your training, and focus on your techniques. Read more about the sport and do your own research. Work hard to excel, and love the art of synchronized swimming. When the sport loves you back, you know you’re in.
