Table Tennis And Table Tennis Accessories In A Nutshell

Table tennis stands to be one of the most popular of sports in the world today, loved and enjoyed by many, particularly in the eastern sides of Asia.

Hailing from humble beginnings, table tennis, as well as table tennis accessories and equipment, started out from Europe, where it stood as a popular after dinner entertainment activity for the Victorians in the 1880s, in an effort to emulate an outdoor tennis game for indoor playing. It is noted that the first generation of table tennis accessories, considering that table tennis wasn’t then an official sport, were everyday home items, which were “maximized” as table tennis accessories.

Books were used as nets, representing the line of nets of table tennis accessories today. The cork of a champagne bottle or a knot of string stood as the ball, while the covers/lids of cigar boxes were used as paddles or rackets. These items were the first generation of table tennis accessories, until the game’s popularity lead manufacturers in developing commercial equipment built for a table tennis game.

Today, the range of table tennis accessories from nets, to paddles, to actual tables, and to balls, are all readily available for one and all. Here are three of the most common of table tennis accessories and equipment, the table tennis ball, the table tennis table, and the table tennis paddle/racket.

In table tennis, celluloid balls are utilized as table tennis accessories, ranging from the 54 millimeter, 44 millimeter and 40 millimeter varieties. International rules define that balls for table tennis games weigh at 2.7 grams and 40 millimeters in diameter. These table tennis balls are required to have a coefficient of restitution value of 0.94. Before, the 38 millimeter diameter ball was used as the international standard, but was changed to the 40 millimeter diameter standard. A ball could be colored either white or orange, and should have a matte finish. In general, the 54, 44 and 40 mm class of ball table tennis accessories are available to one and all.

The Table

Strictly speaking, any table could be utilized as table tennis accessories. But when talking about the official measurements of a table tennis playing arena, the table should be 2.74 meters long, 1.525 meters wide, and should be 76 centimeters high. A table tennis accessories of this class should also be made from masonite or similar timbers, and should have a low-friction coating.
