All About Men’s Volleyball
In the United States, the undisputed "man's man" sport is definitely football; if men even bother watching another sport at all it's either hockey or some sort of wrestling. Not far behind are other similarly aggressive sports like ice hockey and then different types of wrestling or even competitive racing sports like NASCAR or motorcycle racing. It's not uncommon for sports with less physical contact, like soccer or golf, to draw less attention since they're far more low-key. Just like other, more-well known sports, men's volleyball has an impressive history and it also has a very devout following today.
The main objective of any men's volleyball game is to make sure that the volleyball lands in the court of the opposing team - in other words, you want the ball to hit the ground. Men's volleyball teams have six members on the court. There are five positions on the team: opposite hitter, libero, middle hitter, outside hitter and setter. Setters are in charge of the offense for their team; Liberos are responsible for receiving the servers from the opposing teams and wear a different colored jersey; middle hitters perform very fast attacks and there are two on a team; outside hitters attack from the left side and are the ones who get the most sets; and opposite hitters are responsible for defense for the front row. All of these positions are invaluable to a men's volleyball team; without them all, a team can't hope to win a game.
To go along with the above, there is also a certain skill set that one needs to play men's volleyball. A serve occurs at the opening of the game and then whenever the ball switches sides - anytime the ball is put into play from one side to the other from a stop, it's considered a serve. A pass happens when a player receives the ball after the opposing team sends it over; there are bumps, which occur when the ball touches the insides of the forearms, and overhead passes, when a player touches the ball when it's above their head with their fingertips. Then you have the attack, or spike, which is the most important aspect of a men's volleyball team's arsenal; there are many different types of spikes, some of which are specific to individual players. And these are just the very basics of men's volleyball - when you get up to the pro level, the games become much more complex, which makes them truly fascinating to behold.
