The discovery of the islands of the Bahamas by Christopher Columbus in 1492 paved way to naming one of the largest island Gran Bajamar meaning "Great Shallows". The name evolved through centuries and became Grand Bahama. This island is just sixty eight miles from West Palm Beach which can be easily reached by boat or plane making it a popular destination for tourists who wants to be in the tropics while not being that far away form home.

Freeport is the island's capital city, a free trade zone and the second largest city in the island.
