Barbados Culture
Even if history pointed out that the Amerindians, Spaniards, and Portuguese all set foot in Barbados long before the Englishmen did, it was still the British who had the most distinct influence on the island.
Indeed, the fact that the island had been under the British rule from 1627 until it achieved independence in 1966 made a huge impact on Barbados culture. Because of the dominion that spanned several centuries, the British's influence is evident in the day-to-day lives of the people on the island.
The locals, or Bajans, are generally fun-loving and quick-witted individuals. They love festivals, and these are always reflective of some of the elements of the locals' lives. One great part of Barbados culture is the island's national festival called the Crop Over. This is primarily Barbados' biggest festival as well, considering its sugar crop propelled the island's economy between the 1600's and 1980's.
A huge part of Barbados culture has something to do with the locals' love for nature. A visit to the island will take you to some of the world's best tropical gardens. A lot of people flock to Barbados every year just in time to se the best private tropical gardens that the island can offer as unveiled by its Horticultural Society.
Obviously, the reason why a lot of Bajans have made it big in the music industry is because music and the arts are really natural elements in Barbados culture. The island is home to a diverse musical setting that is continuously molding excellent artists, welcoming international talents, and influencing the enhancement of the music industry throughout the world.
The people of Barbados have the natural way with words which is most evident in their literature. This Barbados culture puts the island on the number four spot among the countries with the highest standards of living and literacy rates.
Sport is another element of Barbados culture. The island is famous for its professional and amateur golf courses. Furthermore, polo has become a worthwhile afternoon endeavor on the island. The sports of kings are highly-participated in by men, while pretty ladies donning haute couture watch the games. What used to be a mere local pastime has now become a well-respected international sporting event.
Barbados culture is evident in its spring celebration as well. If Brazil boasts of its Carnivale, the U.S. of its Mardi Gras, and the Germans of its Oktoberfest, Barbados is as proud of its Holders Seasons. This cultural celebration that runs for a month in spring showcases the island's music, theatre, opera, fellowship, cultural delights.
Barbados culture is truly distinctively diverse. Influenced by its equally interesting history, the island proves itself to be "fun under the sun".
