Bermuda Race

A biennial yacht competition that commences from Newport in Rhode Island, the Bermuda race crosses the distance of 635 nautical miles in the open seas. It was first held in 1906 where it has been known to be the pre- eminent distance contest on the eastern coast. A lot believe that it is a feather in every sailor's cap to have joined such where they consider the Lighthouse Trophy the most coveted in its kind.

The earliest Bermuda race started in Gravesend Bay, New York with only three boats that joined. It was sporadically held until the year 1926 where there was a regular schedule set. Continued up to the present except in the peak of the World War II, the Royal Yacht Club in Bermuda hosted the finale festivities since 1923. Three years after, the Cruising Club of America has also participated as sponsors. It was already in 1936 that venue for beginning point was transferred to the Newport in Rhode Island.

Today, the Bermuda race serves as the pinnacle in water expanse events. Just in June of 2006, they celebrated their 100th anniversary. It was launched by a "Dark in Stormy Party" where tickets are required for all that attended. Two days after, it was the most awaited where vessels of all sizes vied for the top spot towards the island. It was then followed by the Royal Yacht Club's Regatta Revelry and Onion Patch. Prize Giving Reception at the Government House then proceeded where Princess Anne and Sir Vereker were the honored guests.

In retrospect to the Bermuda race, Tamberlane was the yacht that made history with a distance of 668, speed of 5.3 and time of 126 hours. In 1907, it was then Dervish turn with a distance of 668, speed of 7.5 and time of 89 hours. Verona in 1908 has a distance of 675, speed of 6.7 and time of 100 hours. Amorita was next with a distance of 668, speed of 8.5 and time of 78 hours. Then there was Vagrant with a distance of 668, speed of 7.4 and time of 90 hours.

After 13 years where it was in a halt due to the Word War II, Memory relived the legacy with a distance of 660, speed of 6.4 and time of 112 hours. Dragoon trailed with a distance of 660, speed of 5.6 and time of 118 hours. Rugosa followed with a distance of 660, speed of 6.4 and time of 103 hours. There was Yankee Girl with distance of 660, speed of 6.7 and time of 98 hours. Highland Light pursued with a distance of 628, speed of 8.8 and time of 71 hours. For two consecutive years, Vamarie won with a distance of 660 and 635, speed of 8.7 and 5.5 and time of 75 and 114 hours, respectively.
