Beijing, China – A Light In The Face Of Adversity For The Olympic Games

In the city of Beijing, China, they will be the hosts of one of the most best known sports games known to mankind. The official Games of the XXIX Olympiad, more commonly known as the Olympics, will present the summer games starting on August 8, 2008 to August 24, 2008.

The Olympics usually last a little over two weeks. Athletes from all over the world come to compete against others. Some of the most popular games held at the Olympics are swimming, basketball and track and field. In fact, track and field is one of the more dominant ones in the Games.

There will be a few games such as soccer that will be held outside of the city of Beijing. However, for the most part, most of the games will be held inside the stadium. The Beijing National Stadium will be the point of where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held.

Some people referred to the Stadium as the "bird nest" because the structure looked a nest.
The seating capacity for this stadium is about 80,000 people. The original design was made with a retractable roof. However, that idea was scratched when officials started counting the cost and safety.

Beijing won the right for the Olympic Games in July 2001. Beijing's has a logo called "Dancing Beijing". They also have mascots called the five Fuwa, which are standing in for the five Olympic Ring colors. These stuff dolls are supposed to provide good luck.

The slogan for the Olympic Games is "One World, One Dream". This means that everyone from all over the world should be together as one. There are hundreds of events in 28 sports that the athletes will participate in.

Even though others seem to have worries about the environment and human rights in Beijing, China is trying its hardest to put on a bright face in spite of that. Even with that, Beijing was granted favor and an exemption by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

During the voting, Beijing was in the lead of the other four candidates (Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka). When it came time for the next round, since the city got the majority votes, there was not a need for a subsequent round.

This wasn't the first time that Beijing competed to host the Olympics. In 1993, they had the lead for the first three rounds, but when it came to the next round, Sydney beat them out for the 2000 Summer Olympics.

China is trying to bring out the Olympic Games to make their country known. They want people to know that they can be good hosts. Every country has issues, but some people feel that China's issues merit more of the spotlight than other countries that put in their bids. The city of Beijing knows that they will have to prove them wrong.

Even with all the issues that were concerning others about Beijing, they have learned to persevere in the face of adversity. The officials are working on making this the best Olympic Games ever in China.
