Cyprus Art

When Leonardo Da Vinci visited Cyprus in one of his sojourns, he was attracted to the famous intricately woven lace that he bought it to dress up the famous Milan Cathedral. Perhaps it is not only the lace that Da Vinci was particularly attracted to but also perhaps more on the beautiful Cyprus art that makes the lace truly a priceless obra maestra.

Cyprus art is one that is truly unique and admirable. This kind of art is a perfect blend of both the famous Greek art and the Turkish brand of art along with other influences. These remarkable influences must have helped the development of Cyprus art that it became one of the most sought-after in the world. The exchanges of culture among the many different groups of people who have come to conquer Cyprus have brought with them some of their unique facets of their own art. When they left the country they also took with some of the country’s priceless treasure in the form of cultural trade.

Cyprus art can be best appreciated through a visit to some of the country’s well-kept museums and art galleries where precious art collections and other objet d'art are displayed for public view. In Nicosia alone, a visit to the famous Cyprus Museum can overwhelm guests with the centuries old possessions. These antique items are clear reflection of the country’s rich history and culture. Each art piece tells a story of its own that somehow relate to the glorious and tumultuous past from the hands of its invaders.

Other places of interest that can truly give rich art collection is the Kunsthistorisches Museum. This art landmark houses some of the most priced art possessions that must have dated back from the early time of the Bronze Age up the time when the Roman Empire reached its zenith. Hence some of the collections are deemed one of the few most important art collections in the whole of Europe.

The most distinct and prominent of the priceless treasures found in the museum is the celebrated Amazon Sarcophagus, which is believed to have come from Soloi, Cyprus. This Amazonian Sarcophagus shows clues that it actually came from Vienna. On the other note, the main art collections of the museum are the limestone sculptures, terracotta, and some pieces of ceramic products. Along these pieces are the collection of remarkable artists like Luigi Palma di Cesnola, Georg von Millosicz, and Max Ohnefalsch –Richter.

Other interesting places to visit are Kyrenia where visitors can take a look at the popular Shipwreck Museum, and Limassol where ruins of grandiose buildings are found. Wherever the paths the visitors are taken to there will always something to look forward to.
