Close Encounter With Fiji Sharks

Many consider Fiji to be the best shark dive in the world what with eight Fiji sharks inhabiting its waters. Shark diving is truly a thrilling Fiji experience where divers will not get close to Fiji sharks but to 300 wonderful species of fish such as Giant Grouper, Rainbow Runners, Eagle Rays, Maori Wrasse and many more.

When you go shark diving in Fiji, you will get the chance to see any of the following Fiji sharks such as the White tip Reef Sharks, Blacktip Reef Sharks, Silvertip Sharks, Grey Reef Sharks, Sicklefin Lemon Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Bull Sharks and the occasional Tiger Sharks. Experience Fiji sharks encounters and more on a single dive on in Fiji.

Fiji's popular Shark Dive brings divers to the Shark Reef Marine Reserve on the border of Beqa Lagoon. This creation of the reserve was for studying the population of Fiji sharks, protecting them and sharks the world over.

There are two shark dives. The first one, which is a forty-five minute dive, brings divers first on a reef with a drop off into Beqa Passage abyss. The water depth here is 100 feet where the feeders draw the Bull sharks. After diving in "The Arena", divers head up to the second part of this dive to an area called "The Den". Here divers can witness smaller Fiji sharks, the Blacktip Reefs and Whitetip Reefs as they circle around divers peacefully. After here, divers will surface and there will be an hour-long interval before the next dive. Onshore, divers feast on fresh fruits, coffee or tea.

On the second shark dive, divers go halfway down the first dive at 55 feet. This area is known as "The Take Out" and is where most feeding happens. Usually, Tawny Nurses are the first Fiji Sharks to arrive at the scene right before the Bull Sharks appear. The Tawny Nurses in this area are already familiar with the presence of divers so they are very at ease and often approach feeders first before taking the offered bait. When the Bull Sharks allow it, other Fiji sharks get to feed such as the Silvertips and Gray Reefs. Bull Sharks are the dominant Fiji sharks up until a Tiger Shark shows up. The solitary Tiger Shark is one of the fiercest predators in the ocean. An encounter with this powerful creature will truly be an unforgettable experience.

Shark Dives can be a one-day trip or a seven-day adventure. Day tours and adventure packages are available. However, shark dives are for certified divers only because of the depth of the dives.
