NZ Fiji Veterans Soccer

History
Established in the early part of the new millennium, the NZ Fiji Veterans Soccer Tournament started out on 2000 in Auckland. The first competition was held at the Avondale College where about eight teams contested one another. Seven originated from New Zealand while the other one was from the Southern Pacific republic. Group Lautoka bested out the other troupes and made history in bringing home the Sashi Mahendra Memorial Cup.

The second event of the NZ Fiji Veterans Soccer Tournament was in Riversdale Park. This time around, the founding groups were linked up by other troupes from Sydney. As compared to the pioneering season, the team from overseas arrived at the finals only to be beaten by the local athletes on kicks that were considered foul. In the audience, an Indian Newslink managing director watched the game and was impressed with the close- knit atmosphere. As a result, the anonymous person promised to provide support in the coming term.

By 2002, the NZ Fiji Veterans Soccer Tournament marked its third stretch in the sporting industry. The venue was changed to Bill McKinley Park with a seating capacity of 2, 000 individuals and has also been regarded among the finest stadiums in New Zealand. Through the power of advertising, there was a rise in number of teams that took part in the competition. From the original eight groups, the figure doubled up to sixteen troupes. The event was also a milestone with the prize worth $5, 000.
