Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

Overcome your fear of heights. Stroll along a glass walkway that hovers thousands of feet above the canyon floor. The view from the Grand Canyon glass bridge will tempt you to get over your phobia. If not, nothing probably ever will.

The Grand Canyon Resort Corporation has conceptualized a major attraction that is not like anything the park has ever had. The Grand Canyon glass bridge's location is set to be at the South Rim, specifically in the Hualapai Indian Reservation area.

The balcony-inspired, all-glass "skywalk" extends beyond the canyon's edge, a good 4,000 feet drop to the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon glass bridge project is set to cost around $30 million, and will feature an 80-yard glass path that will allow guests to view the depth of the canyon.

The Grand Canyon glass bridge initially planned to open its "doors" to the public in January of 2006. However, due to construction delays, the project's completion date has been pushed back further. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is going to become a part of an all-new Grand Canyon West at the park's western edge, some 120 miles away from the city of Las Vegas.

The construction of the Grand Canyon glass bridge started on March 2004. Final test done on May 2005 showed that the structure was given approval as it passed all engineering requirements to up to 400%. Because of this, the Grand Canyon is believed to be able to handle the weight equivalent to 72 fully-loaded 747 jet planes, or roughly 72 million pounds.

If you're wary about taking walk along the glass bottom of the Grand Canyon glass bridge, be comforted by the fact that it can withstand winds of more than 100 miles an hour coming from eight various directions. Earthquake of up to 8.0 in magnitude won't destroy this structure either.

Pretty soon the Grand Canyon glass bridge will be among the world's most amazing man-made structures. Before its conceptualization and its soon-to-be-existence, the only means to obtain a bird's eye view of the Grand Canyon is by flying in a helicopter. Now, up to 120 people at one time can watch the thrilling view of the endless pit from way above it.

From being one of the most fantastic natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon will soon have an engineered structure that will become one of the world's finest. Surely, a walk along the Grand Canyon glass bridge is going to be a chance of a lifetime.
