The Grand Canyon's formation remains one of the most interesting mysteries of all times. Satellite photos may have provided us with vague accounts of a river running along a huge plateau (kaibab). The river allegedly deepens the land below it at an amazing rate of 50 feet per one million years. And just how high the canyon's height is from its floor? You do the math, and that's how long Mother Nature's been carving out the stones.
Despite the numerous debates regarding the Grand Canyon's formation, these cannot erase the fact that this geological wonder has earned its spot in the hall of fame. Today, the massive limestone and sandstone patterns are the only remnants of a mysterious past.
There have been a lot of versions on the real cause for the Grand Canyon's formation. However, despite its remarkable geology, it was not given notoriety until after John Wesley Powell major expedition in 1869.
The earliest traces of human habitation in the canyon dates back to 2000 B.C. And although several expeditions happened starting in the early 1500's, there really weren't any attempts to explain the Grand Canyon's formation until the 1900's. One of the biggest organized meetings of scientist regarding the issue happened in 1964. The debate has put the Grand Canyon's formation in intense scrutiny.
Perhaps every person's biggest question is why the canyon look the way it does. According to science experts, the place where the Grand Canyon is used to have a series of very tall mountains. Throughout the years, erosion has done its share to form plains. Unsteady climates have resulted in the movement of the oceans, which likewise caused new rock layers to be deposited. Rock layers were then naturally piled atop each other.
No one knows exactly when the Grand Canyon formation started. Scientists point out however that the Earth's formation took place about 5 billion years back. However, the roots that can be found at the canyon floors were believed to have been formed 1.7 billion years back. It does not require one to be that good in math to figure out that the Grand Canyon's formation begun way before people know what "erosion" means.
