Daily Life In Ancient Greece

Majority of the Greeks lived in the country. One will find a Greek house to be oddly shaped, though arrangement concepts seem to have some guidelines, but its distinct shape is mainly attributed to the addition of rooms or parts of the house, as the family gets to better their economic status.

The daily life in ancient Greece was very interesting. It is said that on those times, one worked hard, and at the same time played very hard. Activities as hunting and fishing were prevalent. At the same time the daily life in ancient Greece included witnessing dramatic plays and music. Also, these people were conscious and proud of how they look. The women took the time to wear and apply makeup.

A natural set-up in the daily life in ancient Greece was that men worked outside, while the women were in the homes, taking care of matters in the household. Greek men mostly fish, as their area provides for such resources. They planted fruits and vegetables as well.

Homemade bread was a part of their meals, and so was wine. The daily life in ancient Greece wouldn’t be complete without wine. This drink always came with their meals. They even had a Greek god of wine – Dionysus.

Dances played an important role to the physical and emotional health of the ancient Greeks. They believed dancing would do them good. It was rare though for men to dance with women. There were warlike dances, religious worships, dances for wedding, dances for celebration and etc. The dances were accompanied by music played on lyres and some percussion instruments. This is considered to be an important part of a daily life in ancient Greece.

Education in ancient Greece was different for those in Athens, in Sparta, and those found in other city-states. In Athens, the children were educated in order to produce worthy and responsible citizens, who could involve themselves effectively on matters of government, and who could handle themselves in times of war. In Sparta though, the drive was different. It was more like training the children in preparation for combat and in war. In Sparta, once one gets to the age of 18 to 20, the males had to undergo & pass a test of fitness, military ability and leadership skills. If they should fail, they will become middle class citizens who could own property but could not participate in political affairs.
