Drilling Disaster In Indonesia

Are you aware of a southeast Asian country which is very much used to geological crises? Due to the land’s seismic state, there have been a number of calamities that occurred such as the volcano eruption in 1883 and the deadly tsunami in 2004.

Below is an account of another ill- fortune event.

Impact
May 2006 was a different story of tragedy for the world’s largest archipelagic country. The drilling disaster in Indonesia affected approximately thirteen thousand locals that settled in about eight villages especially in the district of Porong in Sidoarjo, which is to the east of Java island. Due to the huge blow of the mud flow, twenty factories had to be forsaken. The livelihood of the people was also very much disturbed as plenty of fish ponds and rice fields were damaged. Even a gas pipe, railroad tracks and a toll street were badly affected.

Reasons
Until this time, the real cause behind the drilling disaster in Indonesia is not yet resolved. There were speculations pointing out the earthquake that took place in Yogyakarta on May 27, 2006 just a day prior to the eruption of the mud flow. It was said that the tremor broke the ground and created probable channels for the slush to arrive at the surface, although the shaking was not that strong since the Ritcher scale only revealed a magnitude of two.

Corporation
The drilling disaster in Indonesia was said to have been triggered by the gas explorations initiated by Lapindo Brantas, a subsidiary under the ownership of PT Energi Mega Persada TBK which turned over sixty percent of their work to the Bakrie Group. The said company is controlled by a national figure, Aburizal Bakrie who is the People’s Welfare Coordinating Minister. He passed on the initial responsibility to his brother who took care of the alleviation expenses brought about by the mud flow. Reports had it that as much as $140 million was set aside and half of which has been used since September of 2006.

Mitigation
For the drilling disaster in Indonesia to stop which has been disturbing thousands of natives that compelled them to leave behind their properties, a chain of dams have been constructed in order to contain the slush. In September 26, the barriers erected have failed which ushered in more flooding in the surrounding villages. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono then authorized that the stream of mire be driven to the Porong River.

Authorities have not yet released an official investigation on what really happened.
