Indonesia Tsunami

As they say, when Mother Nature strikes, you just do not know what you are in for. That is exactly what some parts of southeast Asia experienced because a day after the entire world commemorated the most celebrated season of Christmas, the natives were mourning the loss of more than a thousand lives, natives and foreigners alike. Those foreigners who survived the monumental tragedy were in shock as their vacation turned into a nightmare.

Overview
Better known by the scientific society as Sumatra- Andaman earthquake, this Indonesia tsunami took place on December 26, 2004. Occurring at a Coordinated Universal Time of 00:58:53, the fierce tremor resulted to a series of damaging tidal waves that extended up to the territories of the Indian Ocean. The natural phenomenon killed a huge number of individuals where some bodies are not yet even recovered until this very moment. Distressing the nearby coastal communities such as India, Sri Lanka and Thailand, this has been recorded among the “deadliest disasters in modern history.”

On the Ritcher scale, this Indonesia tsunami originally displayed a magnitude of 9.0 but has been changed to either 9.1 or 9.3. On the account of the seismograph, the intensity is the second highest underground eruption documented. The fierce tremor has also been identified to have the “longest faulting duration” ever witnessed that continued up to 500 or 600 seconds. So massive was the natural phenomenon that as geologists would speak, “brought the entire Earth to shake over a centimeter.”

Casualties
According to the surveys made by the United States, the death toll reached 283, 100 with 14, 000 missing persons and 1, 126, 900 relocated settlers. Reports had it that the days that followed after the Indonesia tsunami, more people were reported missing. Albeit in the weeks that arrived, the figure dramatically increased. More recent lists show that 42, 883 missing people have not yet been found and probably the casualty count could have increased from the initial count.

The demographic of the local residents who were badly affected by the Indonesia tsunami were children. The vicinities that were dominantly affected had a population that mostly composed of young kids. Due to their immaturity, they were the least able to survive the attack of the raging surfs. Wives trailed second as they have been waiting on the shore for the return of their husbands fishing on the open seas.

The ferocious environmental activity is a call to prepare because no mind can comprehend what the times will bring.
