Indonesian Girls

Try to visit any part of the world and you will discover that national concerns, whether it be positive or negative, will always be present. The statement gives justice to the media, dubbed as the “watchdog of society”, who narrates to the public what they deem as “news worthy.” Here are two pressing issues that were out in the open just in the new millennium, which all happened in the globe’s largest archipelagic state.

Human Rights
A seventy- four page report entitled “Always on Call: Abuse and Exploitation of Child Domestic Workers” revealed that there are poor Indonesian girls who started working at a young age of 12 years old from fourteen to eighteen hours daily for one whole week without a day off. Aside from that, the document also shows that the children were not allowed to leave their location of employment as well as keep in touch with their respective families.

These Indonesian girls who come from poor families are such a pity to behold especially that they have been abused psychologically, sexually and physically by those individuals who hired them, as presented by the study. For an hour, the children only earn a meager pay. When you come to think on the amount, it does not even compensate for the lost opportunities that should have been spent in cultivating their growth. Labor recruiters who have been luring them to go to the rural areas with the promise of obtaining greener pastures, have allowed the rampant occurrence of child exploitation.to grow.

Current Events
Since 2001, Poso in Central Sulawesi has been recognized to be an area where Muslims and Christians are fighting against each other. In fact, more than a thousand had already been killed prior to the peace agreement initiated by the government. The violence has said to have stopped but has not entirely gone from the scene. As in 2005, it was reported that three Indonesian girls, of Muslim heritage, were beheaded as they “walked to a Christian school.”

It was learned then that the Indonesian girls were strolling at a cocoa plantation when unknown individuals suddenly attacked them. Police stated that their heads where found meters away from the bodies. They said that the motive behind the assault was not clear. Albeit, authorities did not discard any religious reasons as the Muslim victims attended a private Christian institution. Sources also disclosed that one of the heads was seen outside a church.
