Digicel Jamaica

Digicel launched their mobile service in Jamaica in April 2001. Digicel Jamaica expected to reach one-hundred thousand customer plateau by the end of that first year of operation but instead hit that mark after a mere one hundred days after the launch. This tremendous growth has never been seen before in the history of mobile telecommunications. Digicel Jamaica on its way to exceeding its major competitor broke record after record as the mobile provider with the biggest customer base in the island.

The pace of growth for Digicel Jamaica in comparison to its competitor, has been extremely ‘express’ reaching the four-hundred thousand customer mark only thirteen months, in contrast to its competitor that took about ten years for the same figure to be achieved. Today, Digicel Jamaica’s customer base stands at over a million customers and presently commands about 65% of the mobile market share in Jamaica.

Digicel Jamaica has been a great contributor to the national income of Jamaica as well as employment for hundreds of Jamaican people both directly and indirectly, from retail distribution, construction, and telecommunication, exposing Jamaicans across the board to one of the most vibrant, fast-paced fields existing today.

In addition, Digicel Jamaica drove down mobile rates, even resulting in its competitor cutting call rates by as much as fifty percent in some instances just to battle Digicel’s aggressive power in the market. In some cases, the competition also lead to cuts in its international rates by 40% in an effort at staving off the certainty of Digicel’s increasing hold on the market. In spite of all these actions, Digicel Jamaica still remains to be far ahead of competition when it comes to value for money.

Digicel has an island-wide network of over five-hundred cellular towers stretched across all fourteen parishes and the company has firmly established itself as the mobile provider with the leading network coverage across the country as well as the leading mobile service innovator. With the launching of Digicel’s various service options never before seen by the mobile market in Jamaica, the company established itself as a “brand for the future”. The company has placed Jamaicans on the radical of mobile technology.

Not only has Digicel Jamaica impacted on the lives of Jamaicans through its matchless growth and contribution to the advancement of local telecommunications, but through its corporate citizenship and sponsorships such as Jamaica Cancer Society, Special Olympics Jamaica, Mustard Seed, and Office of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, are but a few of the organizations who have gained of Digicel’s dedication to the betterment of Jamaican life.

Digicel embarks on the next phase of its outstanding journey with current operations in twenty Caribbean countries. The Digicel team has become a bastion in the lives of thousands of Jamaicans.
