Musee D'Orsay: A Must Visit Paris Attraction
Are you planning a trip to Paris? In Paris France, you will find a number of museums. These museums have a wide range of themes that include science, technology, history, art, and fashion. Each of these museums are worth the trip, but there is one museum in particular you will want to examine. That museum is the Musee d'Orsay.
The Musee d'Orsay is one of Paris's most well-know museums. After all, over two millions visitors come to see the treasures inside. It is located in the Gare d'Orsay building and can be found at 1 Rue de la Legion d'Honneur. Many travelers rate this museum as a must visit, not only because of the artwork housed inside, but due to the affordable admission price. In fact, some even go as far as to call it a bargain.
The Musee d'Orsay specializes in fine arts produced between the years 1848 and 1914. You will see a large collection of artwork from some of the most well-known artists, as well as artwork from lesser known artists. A sample of what you may find includes the work of Vincent van Gogh, Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet, and Claude Monet. Regardless of the popularity of the artist, all works housed in the Musee d'Orsay are known for their quality, uniqueness, and historical importance.
The history of the building that houses the Musee d'Orsay is just as intriguing as the artwork found inside. The building was built in 1900 for France's World Fair. During World War II, it was then used to greet prisoners who were freed. In the early 1970s, demolition became an almost certain future; however, it then became an art museum
When visiting the Musee d'Orsay, you have two methods of exploration. Guests with five or less in their party can opt for an independent tour with the assistance of an audio guide. There is, however, the option of a guided tour. Guided tours are recommended, as any questions you have can be answered by your tour guide. Large groups are required to travel through the museum with a guide.
As with many museums in Paris, the Musee d'Orsay has a few rules they ask guests to follow. To preserve the work, no food, drinks, or flash cameras are allowed inside. The touching of works is prohibited. To ensure all visitors are able to have a pleasant visit, cell phones should be shutoff upon entrance.
The perfect end to the perfect museum visit is to eat a nice meal or snack. The Musee d'Orsay is home to a restaurant on the second level, as well as a tearoom. On the fifth and six levels, you will find the Café des Hauteurs and Mezzanine, which are both fast food restaurants. Other onsite services include an information desk, boutique, card shop, and bookstore.
The museum is also home to special events throughout the year. These events are commonly held in the nearby auditorium. These special events may include concerts, learning courses, and other shows. So, be sure to check the schedule, as something may be happening on the day of your visit.
As you can see, there are a number of reasons why you should visit the Musee d'Orsay. Hours do vary depending on the season, so verify this information ahead of time. You should not have any difficulties gaining admittance should you start your day early.
